HipChat is a private group messaging application for businesses that lets you create an unlimited number of chatrooms for various teams and departments. Using HipChat, you can create rooms and give access to project collaborators, coworkers and even clients. These chatrooms can be used to collaborate on projects and day-to-day work through status updates, file sharing, private messages, screen sharing and video calling.
HipChat works on Mac, Windows and Linux devices, it also lets you participate in chats outside of the office with a mobile app for iOS and Android. Some of the more social features of HipChat include support for @mentions, animated GIFs, emoticons and bots, Instagram feeds and Tweets. HipChat was founded by Garret Heaton, Pete Curley and Chris Rivers in September of 2009. Based out of Sunnyvale, California, the three founders are still employed by HipChat. The company received Angel funding in August of 2010 and the app was launched in the same year.
HipChat was acquired by Atlassian in March 2012 and currently work out of the Atlassian offices in San Francisco. Today, many professionals and companies turn to HipChat to provide a better way to communicate. Some of their more well-known clients include Expedia, Netflix, Dropbox, Intuit, and Salesforce.
HipChat offers more than a basic instant messaging tool because it was built with businesses in mind. The company understand that their app is used by project teams who may be sharing sensitive information, for this reason it uses a 256-bit SSL encryption, the same protocol as online banks. Further security features include secure guest access for clients, partners and any other third-parties.
Further advanced features of HipChat that enable teams to collaborate and to keep track of tasks and discussion, include chat history and search, custom notifications, as well as video calling and screen sharing. Furthermore, HipChat integrates with over 60 apps, these include JIRA, Heroku, GitHub, Bitbucket, Zendesk, Mailchimp, Asana, Freshdesk, ZenDesk and Intercom.
The HipChat app utilizes a cool blue and white color scheme. The interface is simple and straightforward to navigate for users of all technical abilities. A left-hand side navigational bar shows you a list of all available rooms and all users, with green, yellow, red and grey circles next to each name indicating their online status.
On the right-hand side you can see all the people in the chat room you are currently in. The chat interface itself uses a familiar chat room layout with usernames and their published comments and date and time next to them in a live activity stream. There are two search bars at the top of the page, one for the current chat room you are in and one to search the chat history.
You can sign up for HipChat through the application website by clicking on the green "Start chatting" button in the center of the page. This leads you to a form to fill in with your name, work email, password and team name. You can then start using the basic version of HipChat for free, or sign up for a 30 day free trail of the "Plus" version.
HipChat is available on two pricing plans: HipChat Basic and HipChat Plus. The basic plan is free and includes group chat, instant messaging, file sharing and unlimited users and integrations. HipChat Plus costs $2 per user per month, and includes all of the Basic features as well as video chat, screen sharing and more.
HipChat is built for businesses of any size and industry to collaborate with coworkers, project team members and clients.
